As well as publishing their quarterly magazine erbacce, they have created a Poetry Publishing Co-operative which offers three publishing services:

Partnership publishing i.e. the poet pays for printing, postage and ISBN. erbacce takes care of cover design, typesetting and editing. Poets then buy the books at cost-price and sell them at readings etc.

Free publishing i.e. erbacce cover all costs and the poet gets six free copies then pays cost-price for copies of the printed book

A contract agreement - which is available for the above services.

They also pay 20% royalties.

I’ve had two books published by erbacce and they really do everything promised. A lot of their poets donate some or all of their royalties back into the press to help subsidise the work of other poets.

They also run an annual poetry competition in which first prize is a full publication deal of a book up 208 pages long. Members of the Co-op must first be Guild members and the Guild will help with setting up the business and getting it started.

The idea stemmed, Adams continued, from observations about 'the plight of the writer'. Many writers, he said, despite years of success of varying degrees, have now found themselves without a publisher or with their books out of print. 'While it's possible for writers to get themselves into a victim's mentality, new technology now gives writers the chance to be empowered by linking up with other writers and being in control of their own work. That's what lies behind the setting up of the Writers' Guild Books Co-op.'

Adams stressed that all decisions concerning the Co-operative needed to be taken collectively, but he suggested a starting point of seven principles:

Membership is voluntary and open to all WGGB members

The Co-op's membership controls its policy and activities

The membership controls its capital and runs it as a not-for-profit organisation and with surpluses re-invested. If dissolved, any surpluses should go to the WGGB

The Co-op is an independent aspect of the work of the WGGB

The activities of the Co-op currently include: providing advice and information for members on aspects of publishing and self-publishing; marketing members’ books through a website; helping members publish ebooks

The Co-op should make contact with other writers and organisations, nationally and internationally

The Co-op should aim to develop sustainably.

Robert Taylor, Guild Chair and one of the founding directors of the Books Co-op, said that he believed it was 'a very innovative and exciting project' and one that he 'was always convinced the Guild should be involved in'.

The Co-op is set up as a company limited by guarantee, he explained, and is not-for-profit. 'Co-operative status is a particular type of legal structure that, in particular, guarantees involvement of members in the running of the company and the way that any profits or assets are distributed. Therefore the work of the Books Co-op is in the hands of its members. It’s not what the directors want or what the Guild wants; it's about what the members want. The directors are the managers of the company, they carry out the wishes of the members.'

Guild General Secretary, Bernie Corbett, another of the founding directors, added that the Guild's Executive Council had decided that, to promote both the Co-op and the Guild, any new Candidate Members will be able to join both for just £50 .

Membership of the Co-op, it was pointed out, is currently free to existing Guild members.
Various possibilities for the Co-op’s work were then discussed, including:

Helping to promote members' self-published books

Sharing expertise and resources

Providing links with specialists such as printers and designers

Developing a Guild 'imprint' to publish members' work

Helping members to publish and sell ebooks

Issuing free ISBN numbers to members

More information on the next steps and the next meeting of the Books Co-op will follow soon. It is the culmination of several meetings hosted by the Guild over the past three years recognising that self-publishing has become respectable and attractive to many serious writers, and is likely to grow as conventional publishing staggers from crisis to crisis and the world learns to love ebooks and print-on-demand.

The meeting will be open to any member of the Guild involved or interested in self-publishing who may not have caught up with the project yet.

WE NEED TO KNOW IF YOU INTEND TO COME so that we can book a suitably-sized venue and order the right amount of food, wine and soft drinks. So please RSVP to susan@writersguild.org.uk as soon as you can but in any case by THURSDAY 8 APRIL 2010 at the latest.

We plan to add more material to this website such as information and advice about self-publishing, marketing, print-on-demand and ebooks. If you have ideas about other ways we can improve the site, please bring them to the launch meeting.

Beyond that, we are investigating how the Co-op can offer authors a comprehensive ebook service. We would take your digital file, convert it to ebook files suitable for the Kindle, Sony Reader, iPad, etc., and make them available for download directly from the site at prices to be fixed by the author.

All these ideas will be discussed on 27 April, along with plans for making sure the Writers’ Guild Books Co-op is truly run by the members, for the members. We hope to see you there!

Training courses

http://www.writersguildbookscoop.co.uk/1/post/2009/12/training-courses.html

http://www.writersguildbookscoop.co.uk/1/post/2009/12/training-courses.html#comments

Uncategorized

The following training courses taking place at various dates next year at the London College of Communications might be of interest:Introduction to publishingExploring the world of print - print media options [...]

The following training courses taking place at various dates next year at the London College of Communications might be of interest:

Introduction to publishing

Exploring the world of print - print media options

Proofreading

Writers' Guild Books Co-op launch

http://www.writersguildbookscoop.co.uk/1/post/2009/10/writers-guild-books-co-op-launch.html

http://www.writersguildbookscoop.co.uk/1/post/2009/10/writers-guild-books-co-op-launch.html#comments

Uncategorized

The official launch of the Writers' Guild Books Co-op will take place early in 2010.
