It is only when we understand our past, that we can appreciate the present, and look with optimism to the future. This is why this book has been written.

This book provides a unique insight into the political and social events that shaped the lives of a community. During the 20th century, this community successfully made the transition from being an agricultural community focused on rural village life in central Gujarat in India to an international community made up of city dwellers, but still able to identify with the land they called Charotar.

The authors, a daughter and father team, have imparted their first-hand knowledge and experience of the challenges of two major migrations during the 20th century. It is a reflection of a difficult and often painful journey from central Gujarat in India to East Africa and then to Britain. In so doing, the authors have provided a valuable resource for the descendants of Leva Patidar Patel community who now live in different parts of the world. It also provides an insight to anyone interested in the history and migrant experience of a community originating from the Indian Subcontinent.
