                                                PA Breinburg

                                                Picture
Like all her leading characters, PA Breinburg is from a mixed cultural heritage. Originally from South America, Petronella is bilingual and comes from a Catholic background. She has travelled widely and visited many countries in South America including Venezuela, Brazil, and French Guiana. She also lived in Guyana before immigrating to the UK.

Petronella studied at several universities before her appointment at Goldsmiths’ University, where she was a senior lecturer, and head of the Caribbean Studies Centre.

She has published a long list of books for children and teenagers, and was a runner up of the Kate Greenwood Award for children’s books.  Petronella also received an award for Life Long Achievement in children’s literature from the Podium Kwakoe Forum for culture and theatre in Amsterdam.

Founder of Caribbean Communities in Europe (CACOEU), she is now in semi-retirement. However, she is actively pursuing her own literary career, as well as learning Spanish and also supporting and encouraging young inspiring artists and other writing groups.

Instead Of Roses And Rings was her first adult novel and the first of a trilogy. Her second in the series was Long Road To Salamanca. The third in that trilogy is in progress.

She has also written and produced plays in schools and in the higher education sector.

Nineteen-year-old Justin, a science degree student and sixteen year old Lawrence on a first year Baccalaureate Diploma, bump into each other one Christmas Eve. Their eyes meet across the mayhem of last minute shoppers. And so begins a seven month ride of ups and downs, of yes and no, of on and off, on an emotional seesaw that will have consequences. And repercussions.

Nineteen-year-old Chris, a student ‘Returnee to education’, and his 29–year-old supervisor, known as the ‘Iceberg’, have just two things in common: they are both human and of the same gender.

That was where their commonality ended. Academically, culturally, socio-economically and in temperament they were worlds apart. Chris is placed in the care of the ‘Iceberg’ renowned for having performed miracles with some of the very hard cases brought to the college.

The paranormal element is evident from the outset. Chris looks uncannily like a dearly departed love from his supervisor’s past. The Iceberg is unnerved by this and begins to run –but as he runs, the young Christ gives chase, using all the skills he acquired to survive on the streets of London.

Instead of Roses and Rings unfolds in a multicultural setting with its many idiosyncrasy and taboos. It travels in dreams and fantasies from London to a French Caribbean Island and back to London culminating in an apparent supernatural event.
